The clinical unit of Rheumatology at the University Hospital of Toulouse is headed by Alain Cantagrel and staffed by 11 senior rheumatologists (12,000 out-patient clinics per year), and has a 51 bedded in-patient unit for assessment, treatment and monitoring of patients suffering from musculoskeletal diseases. This unit is part of a large medical and surgical department, working with surgeons particularly involved in knee and hip osteoarthritis. CHUT has a special unit dedicated to clinical research with a full time clinical research nurse and 2 technicians of clinical research. The Hospital participates regularly to 10 to 12 multicentric national or international trials in the different fields of rheumatology: inflammatory diseases, osteoarthritis or osteoporosis.
Prof. Alain Cantagrel
Prof. Alain Cantagrel is Professor and Head of the Rheumatology department, Hôpital Purpan, Toulouse, France. Prof. Cantagrel qualified in medicine from Paul Sabatier’s University in Toulouse in 1985. He spent one year in Boston, at the Massachusetts General Hospital, USA, before returning to Toulouse where he obtained a charge of Professor of Rheumatology in 1991. He is involved in a number of national and international multi-centre studies, a majority of which are on the physiopathology and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, he participates in the evaluation of most new biotherapies in rheumatoid arthritis. Professor Cantagrel undertakes most of his basic research at the Unit INSERM 1043-CNRS 5282 in Toulouse Purpan. He is vice-president of the French Society of Rheumatology and an International member of the American College of Rheumatology.
