Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute
Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute is the main Italian institute of orthopedics and traumatology. In 1981 it was designated a ‘scientific research hospital’ in recognition of its high level of healthcare and research in orthopedics and traumatology. The institute’s strength lies in the close integration between healthcare (about 150,000 patients examined and over 20,000 orthopaedic surgeries every year) and scientific research, which is carried out in nine laboratories at the institute.
In regenerative medicine IOR is involved in pre-clinical studies in vitro and in experimental animal models on tissues of the locomotor apparatus, cartilage, bone, tendons, and ligaments. It also carries out research on the in vitro characterization of human cells and biomaterials carrying different cell types for tissue regeneration and evaluation studies of osteo-articular regenerated tissue (as a result of regenerative medicine treatments) at different follow-up times and clinical trials. In osteo-articular diseases the group is mainly focused on the pathophysiology of OA, in studies on molecular mechanisms and mediators responsible for bone, cartilaginous and synovial tissue alterations and pre-clinical studies in animal model.
